More recently, Hair removal has become increasingly popular with men. We see it in style, fashion, and fitness. Less hair means showing more surface area. Back muscles look more prominent, abs sleeker, arms bigger, and ahem, other areas become more appealing. In a recent and very scientific study done by me asking all of my female friends- more than half of women said they prefer a man with less body hair.
Shaving leaves ingrown hairs, and waxing hurts like a bitch. But you know what doesn’t hurt and is also pretty bad ass? LASERS. Yep, frikin laser beams (RIP mini-me).
What- you thought laser hair removal hurt? If my twelve-year-old cousin with a weird hormone disorder can get her chin lasered for her bat-mitzvah- so can you, buddy. Unless the spa you’re going to has a machine from 2003- you should be feeling little to no pain during the process. Luxury laser spas like Petals in New York City have the newest and latest machines that make hair removal quick, and not scary at all.
So you’ve got more questions- I know. Here are the answers to everything you ever wondered about Laser Hair Removal.
Let’s start with the basics:
WHO: Laser hair removal is for MOST people. Ideally for people with lighter skin and darker hair, but will work for darker toned skin too. Very light or blonde hair won’t take effect to the lasers. Sorry. Dark brown/black skin will take effect only with certain types of lasers that work on a 1064nm Nd: YAG wavelength (it’s real- look it up). You can find machines like this at higher end laser spas like Petals Laser Lounge.
WHAT: it’s a laser, dude.
WHERE: you can get lasered anywhere on your body. I know you probably only thought about lasering your back or chest- but you can laser pretty much anywhere on your body- including your nether regions and even your beard line.
WHEN: The sessions usually last about 30 minutes for larger areas, so book your appointment whenever it works for you- I don’t know your life.
WHY: See everything above.
More answers to more questions:
How many laser sessions will I need? Usually, the total number is anywhere between 6 and 8 sessions, but this mostly depends on the person, your hair type and the area being treated. Hair is targeted during the growth cycle, so you’re gonna have to commit (GASP!) to a number of treatments over a period of months.
Does Laser Hurt? Nah, not really. Lot’s of people describe it as a feeling of someone snapping a rubber band onto your skin, but you can also request a topical numbing cream beforehand if you’re nervous.
Do I need to shave before getting laser? You should if you can. When the hair is shaved it makes it WAY easier for your technician to target the hair follicle- making your process a lot quicker and less painful. Most places will shave you beforehand if you have too much hair to avoid any issues.
Can I or should I shave in between laser treatments? Short answer- yes, you totally can if you want to. You don’t have to if you’re not feeling it, but again- you’ll want to be shaved before your next laser treatment.
